Living Fossil

Ginkgo biloba leaves against the blue sky. This tree is considered a living fossil and has no other living close relatives. (I also have a picture of a fossil.)

There is some controversy over whether it actually still occurs naturally in the wild or just as a cultivated species. It has been cultivated in both Chinese and Japanese temple gardens, where it was encountered by Europeans first recording it in 1690. Some of those trees are thought to be over a thousand years old. Ginkgoes are extremely resilient. Six ginkgo trees were among the few survivors within a 1–2 km radius from the 1945 atom bomb explosion in Hiroshima. Though charred by the blast, they soon sprouted again and are still alive to this day! No wonder this species defied extinction for such a long time.

It is now popular all over the world as a decorative tree. Ginkgo is dioecious, meaning trees are either male or female, and many of the decorative trees are actually cloned or grafted male trees. This is because the seeds of the female trees reek abominably when they rot – very much like vomit or worse. Apparently nobody wants that smell in their yard!

"Krea" is the new program for the living area of Mazzali.

Very high quality content technical characterize the program: a sandwich compound of plywood by 6 cm makes "Krea" a product of absolute value.
A lot of colours, suggesting a freedom in the design that should not be only space but also visual, almost sensory.

And then freedom to create, compose, play with the elements. Krea is solution and innovation, is the new concept of living that Mazzali has been able to interpret with refinement, content and search.

And finally Krea is sustainability: all woods used are from well managed forests for a furniture that increasingly puts sustainable development as a key evolutionary.
