Live With Intention

“Live with intention. Walk to the edge. Listen hard. Practice wellness. Play with abandon. Laugh. Choose with no regret. Appreciate your friends. Continue to learn. Do what you love. Live as if this is all there is.”

Reflecting On A Live Cricket

This is a live cricket that I captured when I found it in a pile of eucalyptus logs while splitting wood. My plan was to photograph it after it had shuffled off this "mortal coil and gone to join the bleeding choir invisible", to quote John Cleese of Monty Python fame. My wife would have none of it and convinced me to try and photograph it live. That was extremely challenging because as soon as Maria set it on a mirror, it immediately scampered away as fast as its 6 legs could cary it. The reason I didn’t get all of it in the frame is that by the time I could manually focus the macro lens it had scampered out of the field of view. I took a lot of shots, and this is the best I could come up with. Many of the shots had parts of her hand in it. When we were done, Maria released it into the garden, where hopefully it will live a long, fulfilling and prosperous live (by cricket standards). If you’ve been married as long as we have, you probably understand.
We placed the critter on a mirror, because I like seeing the added dimensionality that the reflection reveals. Simple lighting with a YN560 in a 24 inch soft box at maximum power at camera left. The flash and my tripod mounted camera were triggered by a Yongnuo RF-603N.
