Editor’s note: Happy Friday, everyone! A little helping of Aurora Borealis and a slice of daybreak to start the weekend. Posted to the NASA Views Earth at Night photoset: www.flickr.com/photos/28634332@N05/sets/72157625188331491/

This nighttime view of Earth’s horizon and scattered city lights was photographed by one of the Expedition 30 crew members aboard the International Space Station. Activity of Aurora Borealis appears from behind one of the orbital outpost’s solar array panels, then fades into an area where Earth’s limb is visible and finally a small "slice" of daybreak appears at right.

Image by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center
Expedition 40 Commander Steve Swanson of NASA photographed this image from an Earth-facing window on the Earth-orbiting International Space Station featuring the Western Sahara Desert where it meets the Atlantic Ocean on May 23, 2014. The city of Tarfaya, Morocco, located at 22.45 degrees north latitude, and 13.13 degrees, east longitude, is visible. Obvious streaks in the sand were created by northerly winds.

About Crew Earth Observations:

In Crew Earth Observations (CEO), crewmembers on the International Space Station (ISS) photograph the Earth from their unique point of view located 200 miles above the surface. Photographs record how the planet is changing over time, from human-caused changes like urban growth and reservoir construction, to natural dynamic events such as hurricanes, floods and volcanic eruptions. A major emphasis of CEO is to monitor disaster response events in support of the International Disaster Charter (IDC). CEO imagery provides researchers on Earth with key data to understand the planet from the perspective of the ISS. Crewmembers have been photographing Earth from space since the early Mercury missions beginning in 1961. The continuous images taken from the ISS ensure this record remains unbroken.
