A Brief History of Hollywood

1931 – Warner Bros. attracts a new kind of actor: not the perfect, glorious movie idols of the silent era, but more unconventional, down-and-dirty theater actors. Stage stars James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson make their debuts in the bullet-ridden crime tales THE PUBLIC ENEMY and LITTLE CAESAR. The gangster film gains popularity among the disillusioned audiences of the Great Depression: the merits of honest hard work and careful financial planning had crashed along with the stock market.

‘Sitting on history’

Bill Woodrow’s ‘Sitting On History‘ was purchased for the British Library by Carl Djerassi and Diane Middlebrook in 1997. It was photographed in the foyer (lobby) of the British Library. Sitting on History, with its ball and chain, refers to the book as the captor of information which we cannot escape.
Information above gleaned from information sheet available at the British Library information desk
The bust you can see top left is Sir Colin St John Wilson RA – Celia Scott, 1998 – a gift from the American Trust for the British Library. Erm, Sir Colin designed the British Library building.
