1872 – Former governor of California Leland Stanford hires photographer and traveling showman Eadweard Muybridge to settle a ,000 bet: does a galloping horse ever take all four hooves off the ground? Muybridge lines up a row of cameras alongside the horse’s path and captures a sequence of images that, when viewed in quick succession, created the illusion of movement. Viewers call the phenomenon, “a magic lantern gone mad”.

NOTE: This is a little miniseries I’m going to be working on over the next few weeks, covering the movie industry from inception to the mid-twentieth century.

1927 – Filmmakers and stars form the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, both an eager ploy to promote the industry, and an attempt to keep the unions away by giving the film business a self-contained way to mediate labor disputes. The Academy holds their first awards ceremony two years later. The silent war epic WINGS is named Best Picture, but it will be the last silent film to win the award until 2011’s THE ARTIST. The advent of sound will change the movie industry forever.

Part Four coming soon…
